WRECK DIVER SPECIALTY

Wreck Diving - Wreck PenetrationCourse Overview: The lure of exploring sunken vessels, airplanes and automobiles is something most divers cannot resist. The Wreck Diver Specialty course introduces you to wreck diving and helps you develop the skills and knowledge necessary for safe and fun wreck diving.

Prerequisites: To qualify for the Wreck Diver course, an individual must be certified as an Adventure Diver (or have a rating equivalent to that of an Advanced Open Water Dive and be at least 15 years of age).

Wreck Diving - PlaneCourse Activities: You will learn about the planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards of wreck diving. You will also learn about the preparation and use of lights, air supplies, special equipment, penetration lines and reels and limited-visibility diving techniques and emergency procedures.

  • Classroom: There is one classroom session. The classroom session will cover the entire Wreck Diver Specialty Manual, review your knowledge review answers and prepare you for each of the four open water dives.
  • Independent Study: Before you come to class you need to read the entire Wreck Diver Specialty Manual and complete Knowledge Reviews Part I and Part II. You will need to turn in the knowledge reviews prior to certification. Recommended: watch the video/DVD.
  • Open Water Dives: The 4 open water dives are done at an area lake/scuba park or on a dive trip (must be done over a 2 day period).
Wreck Diving - Dive Reel, Penetration LineForms Required: Students need to complete the three (3) forms: Liability Release, Statement of Understanding, and Medical Statement prior to entering the water.

Materials/Equipment Required: Wreck Diver Specialty Manual (included in course price) and Video/DVD (recommended - $25.00).

Price of Course: $145 - Price includes: Wreck Diver Specialty Manual, certification card, picture for certification card and 4 dives under instructor supervision. Add the Wreck Diver Video/DVD and log insert for $25. If you have done a Deep dive in connection with your Adventure Diver certification and provide us with a copy of the Adventure Log page signed by your instructor or if you have the Advanced Open Water Diver Certification, you only need 3 more dives to complete the specialty. We will subtract $20 from course price.

Deposit: $40 - Costs of materials.

Wreck Diving - RMS RhoneLength of Course: If you have read the entire Wreck Diver Specialty Manual, completed the knowledge reviews and watched the entire video prior to coming to class, the classroom session should take approximately 1 hour depending upon class size.

 OPEN WATER DIVES

Dive 1:

  • Instructor or certified assistant leads using navigation techniques
    appropriate for wreck chosen.
  • Students control their buoyancy and remain neutrally buoyant.
  • Students avoid silting problems through buoyancy and fin control.
  • View the wreck and aquatic life for any hazards.
  • Return to ascent point without surfacing.
Dive 2:
  • Explore the wreck.
  • Map the wreck (or portion of wreck depending on size).
  • Penetration assessment – locate potential entry and exit points.
  • Return to ascent point without surfacing.
Dive 3:
  • Deploy penetration line on the outside of the wreck.
  • Swim along the penetration line while holding on to a dive light
and moving in such a manner as not to kick up silt.
  • Navigate to ascent point.
  • Practice deploying, following and retrieving penetration line at the surface.
Dive 4: Instructor discretion on whether or not to penetrate the wreck. The penetration dive will follow Dive 4A and the non-penetration dive will follow Dive 4B. Only one dive 4 will be made, not both.

Dive 4A - Penetration Dive - Students must be accompanied by the instructor.
  • Students make an actual wreck penetration with instructor’s supervision.
  • Use penetration line as a guide.
  • Swim in such a manner as to avoid kicking up silt.
  • Find penetration entry point.
  • Deploy penetration line into wreck and swim as previously practiced.
  • Penetrate wreck within safe limits.
  • Retrieve penetration line and exit wreck.
  • Navigate to ascent point.
      Dive 4B - Non-Penetration Dive
  • Students plan dive independently.
  • Students should plan to return to the ascent point without surfacing.
  • Instructor accompanies students on their planned dive.
  • Students navigate on the wreck so class reaches the ascent point without surfacing.
