 TANK SAFETY
At DIVING FOR FUN, we are very concerned about your safety while using dive cylinders. To maintain a high level of safety we depend upon training, safety check standards, and tools provided by Advanced Inspection Technology and Professional Scuba Inspectors, Inc.

Diving For Fun - OpticalPlus Inspection Tool As most scuba divers are aware, scuba tanks must be hydrostatically tested every five years. This test assures that the tank has not lost its elasticity and become brittle through abuse or heat damage, etc. However, simply passing a hydro test does not assure that a tank is safe. Visual inspections must be done at least once a year to assure that other defects or dangers do not exist. Most tank failures and injuries are due to factors normally found during the visual inspection process. Some of these defects include:
  • Cracks in tank walls or threads
  • Corrosion and pitting
  • Wrong valve
  • Heat damage
  • Wrong burst disk
  • And much more...
VISUAL INSPECTION PROCESS
Because of our concern for your safety, we thoroughly inspect each tank in several areas before applying an Evidence of Inspection Sticker. This sticker is our assurance - and yours - that a professional inspection has been performed. Our inspection process complies with C.G.A, P.S.I. and O.S.H.A. standards. Below is the strict step-by-step inspection process we follow on EVERY tank Visual Inspection performed by DIVING FOR FUN:

Diving For Fun - OpticalPlus Inspection Tool Diving For Fun - OpticalPlus Inspection Tool
  1. SLOWLY Drain Cylinder
  2. Observe & Record Background Data
  3. Remove ALL Accessories
  4. Administer Hammer Test to Steel Cylinders
  5. Remove Valve
  6. Check For and Remove Foreign Objects
  7. View Interior of Cylinder
  8. Inspect Interior with Pick/End Probes
  9. Inspect Cylinder Threads - Visual Plus (Eddy Current) for Aluminum and Optical Plus for all other tanks
  10. Replace the O-Ring
  11. Inspect the Over-Pressure Frangible Disc Exhaust Ports
  12. EVALUATE ALL DATA
  13. MAKE JUDGMENT
  14. Reinstall Valve
  15. Assembly and Apply Evidence of Inspection (EOI) Sticker
  16. Fill Cylinder and Check for Leaks
  17. Complete all Forms and Paperwork for each Cylinder
  18. Return Cylinder to Owner
Upon the completion of the visual inspection we will apply an Evidence of Inspection Sticker and save all tank information and measurements to our database and print a computer generated report as shown below for your records. See example report below or click on the image to download a sample report.

 SERVICES DESCRIPTION PRICING
K-Valve Service $20.00
The tank valve is removed and completely disassembled. All parts are cleaned in a mild acid bath in a ultra-sonic cleaner, rinsed thoroughly and then rinsed in a hot water bath and dried. The valve is then lubricated, a new burst disk is installed, new O-rings are installed and reassembled. The service price does NOT include the valve service kit.
K-Valve O2 Service $25.00
The tank valve is removed and completely disassembled. All parts are cleaned in a mild acid bath in a ultra-sonic cleaner, rinsed thoroughly and then cleaned with an O2 degreaser, rinsed in a hot water bath and dried. The valve is then lubricated with crysta-lube, a new burst disk is installed, new Viton 90 durometer O-rings are installed and reassembled. The service price does NOT include the valve service kit.
J-Valve Service $35.00
The tank valve is removed and completely disassembled. All parts are cleaned in a mild acid bath in a ultra-sonic cleaner, rinsed thoroughly and then rinsed in a hot water bath and dried. The valve is then lubricated, a new burst disk is installed, new O-rings are installed and reassembled. The service price does NOT include the valve service kit.
J-Valve O2 Service $40.00
The tank valve is removed and completely disassembled. All parts are cleaned in a mild acid bath in a ultra-sonic cleaner, rinsed thoroughly and then cleaned with an O2 degreaser, rinsed in a hot water bath and dried. Visual Tank Inspection (Aluminum) $20.00
The cylinder is visually inspected inside and out to verify no harmful corrosion exists. Aluminum cylinders are required to undergo an EDDY Current neck inspection to ensure there are no hairline fractures in the threaded portion of the tank neck. A new Evidence of Inspection Sticker (EOI) is placed on the tank containing the inspector's name and license number. The valve is checked for smooth operation, the threads cleaned, and a new tank O-ring is installed. Price includes the tank O-ring, sticker, and air fill. If a cylinder fails it MUST BE CONDEMNED.
Visual Tank Inspection (Steel) $20.00
A complete visual inspection inside and out, which includes any necessary brushing to determine the extent of corrosion. Existing Evidence of Inspection (EOI) stickers will be removed unless otherwise requested. This ensures no corrosion has begun underneath the old stickers. A new Evidence of Inspection Sticker (EOI) is placed on the tank containing the inspector's name and license number. The valve is checked for smooth operation, the threads cleaned, and a new tank O-ring installed. Price includes the tank O-ring, sticker, and air fill. If a cylinder fails it MUST BE CONDEMNED.
Cylinder Tumbling $45.00
This process involves filling a tank with abrasive tumbling media and then rotating it horizontally on a machine. This 'sands' the interior to remove rust deposit or pits. Due to the nature of tumbling, this process takes approximately 24 hours or longer depending on severity of cleaning required.
O2 Compatible Tank Cleaning $75.00
To convert a scuba tank from air usage to Nitrox or during the annual inspection of a Nitrox tank the vessel MUST BE O2 cleaned. O2 cleaning removes all hydro-fluorocarbons from inside the tank and tank valve. We do a light tumble, wash with O2 compatible degreasers, rinse and dry the cylinder. We will also O2 clean the tank valve as described above. Price includes O2 cleaning of the tank and valve, Evidence of Inspection (EOI) sticker and 32% Nitrox fill.
Hydrostatic Testing $35.00
A hydrostatic test is required by the DOT every five years on Scuba cylinders used in the United States. Testing is done once a week, usually on Thursdays, and a days worth of prep time is necessary. Once the tank has passed it is stamped with the month and year as required by law. If a cylinder fails it MUST BE CONDEMNED.
